Short bio:

Beate Poikāne is a visual artist, theatre-maker, and scenographer from Riga, Latvia. Her artistic explorations manifest in various forms at the intersection of visual art and contemporary performing arts. Through methods of worlding and speculative storytelling, she crafts self-performing environments and performances with nuanced visual dramaturgy. The compositions are crafted as expanded ensembles of space, sculptural sequences and audiovisual expressions.

Her thematic and asthetical choices are informed by the observations of Latvian post-socialist landscapes of contradictions and socio-economic complexities. Taking an embodied female perspective she issues searching for ways to implement the regional specific experiences in the character and set build-up, morphing spaces with bodies and coming up with alternative narration. Outcomes question the potential for imagination to become a tool for reshaping existing relationalities, braking them and creating new connections.

Beate mainly works in mediums of installation and performance (directing, scenography, dramaturgy). She has graduated from Performing Arts at Stockholm University of the Arts. She has a master’s degree in Scenography and a bachelors degree in Visual Communication from the Latvian Art Academy, she has also participated in the Performance and Time Based Art program at the KMD Art Academy in Bergen. She is working in Baltic – Nordic region and internationally.
